Should He Resign?

June 7th, 2011 by John Feehery

There are more than a few politicians at the federal level who share two conflicting traits: They believe they are the center of the universe, but they also believe that they are anonymous.

That is especially true for Anthony Weiner, but he is not the first and certainly not the last political figure to be beset with controversy brought on by his own stupid actions.

These politicians believe that they should be able to get free drinks at a bar, but are shocked when a reporter calls them on it. They believe that they can pick up girls who are not their wives and are shocked when somebody notices. They believe that they can get away with low-grade corruption, but are devastated when they end up serving time in a minimum security jail.

These politicians are not babes in the woods. They learn a great deal about life and about hard-ball politics when they run for office. They are used to people combing through their garbage, pouring over their tax returns, having every inch of their lives examined with a fine-tooth comb.

But somehow, after the campaign is over, they drop their defenses. Or after they have spent decades in Congress, they figure that they are invulnerable.

Men Behaving Badly

The best show on television, in my humble opinion, is “The Good Wife.” Julianna Margulies and Chris Noth star as a political power couple thrown on the rocks by a sex scandal.

Based loosely on the troubles that faced Eliot Spitzer (who now hosts his own television show) and just about every other politician, “The Good Wife” takes the plot from the angle of the spurned wife. How does she move on with her life? How does she protect her family? How does she protect her reputation?

As The Good Wife has evolved, it has shown the shades of gray in most relationships. She thinks about having an affair of her own. She has to compromise her own principles in order to succeed in her profession (she is a lawyer in a very aggressive Chicago law firm).

I couldn’t help but think of “The Good Wife” when turning on cable shows and catching the top two news items yesterday.

Item One: Head of the IMF is charged with rape.

Item Two: Wife of the former California Governor splits after discovering that her husband fathered a child with the family’s house employee.

“Zest”

I always liked David Bonior.  Sure, he was a left-wing, pro-labor, hard-core Democrat, who opposed much of what my personal world-view may be.

But he had integrity.  He was pro-life Democrat, which takes a lot of courage.  And you could tell he really cared about people.

My former boss, Speaker Denny Hastert, liked Bonior too.  He was somebody in the opposition’s leadership who would always give the Speaker the straight scoop.

So, when he and his wife invited my wife and I to dinner at their new restaurant on Capitol Hill’s Barrack’s Row, I was happy to accept.  Bonior is the major investor, and his son and daughter-in-law, who have long experience in the restaurant business, actually run it.

Called “Zest”, the restaurant is just about what you would expect from somebody like David Bonior.  It serves good, American food at great American prices.  It’s not particularly flashy, but it is very comfortable, nicely lit, with a good vibe to it.

There is a bar towards the front of the restaurant with a nice-sized big screen television, which I am fairly certain will have ESPN on it all day.
